Sunday’s HONK! procession is not a stationary Harvard Square event: it creates a moving two-city corridor from Davis Square, with Somerville closures beginning two hours before the noon parade and Cambridge streets changing as the route approaches.
That matters for Boston-area students and visitors treating Harvard Square’s Oktoberfest as a single destination. The festival schedule places the parade from noon to 2 p.m. on October 11, beginning at Herbert and Day streets in Somerville and reaching Harvard Square around 1:15 p.m. Boston University’s independent weekend guide lists Oktoberfest from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the parade at 1 p.m. in the square.
The route starts before the music
HONK!’s closure notice says Somerville police plan to close Day Street at Orchard Street and Herbert Street at Chester Street at 10 a.m. The staging streets are reserved for parade participants until 1 p.m. Further closures along Elm Street begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue in stages toward the Cambridge line.
Cambridge’s listed closures start at 10 a.m. at Day Street and Massachusetts Avenue, with Russell Street at Massachusetts Avenue and Orchard Street at Blake Street scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Several side streets become abutter-only at Elm Street; Windom Street is slated to operate temporarily in both directions until the parade passes.
The useful consequence is temporal as well as geographic. Someone crossing the corridor at 10:30 a.m. can encounter restrictions even though the first band is not due to step off until noon. Someone waiting in Harvard Square at noon may still have more than an hour before the head of the procession arrives.
Two events meet in one square
Harvard Square’s Oktoberfest runs alongside the arriving parade, with live music, vendors, crafts and beer gardens, according to BU Today’s October 7 guide. HONK! describes more than 15 bands and 30 community groups in the procession. The organiser says the route begins promptly at noon and is expected to start arriving around 1:15 p.m.
Those details should not be inflated into a crowd estimate or an economic-impact claim; neither the organiser nor the independent guide supplies evidence for one. They do establish that campus-area access is shaped by a handoff: Somerville manages the beginning, Cambridge manages the approach and Harvard Square hosts the destination festival.
Plan around a moving closure
Drivers should treat the published times as a sequence, not a single all-day roadblock. The organiser says locations will reopen after the parade passes and cautions that plans can change on the day. Residents on the named side streets should note the abutter-only controls rather than assume ordinary through access.
Walking and transit avoid the parking question but not the crowd or street-crossing changes. Visitors should check live MBTA service alerts and current police or organiser updates before leaving. This report does not characterize the closure list as a City of Boston order: Davis Square is in Somerville, Harvard Square is in Cambridge, and the stated plans belong to those jurisdictions.
The clearest itinerary follows the parade’s own logic. Arrive in Davis Square before the noon departure to see the procession form, or reach Harvard Square for the expected 1:15 p.m. arrival and the continuing Oktoberfest. Trying to drive across the route between those moments is the one plan the street schedule is designed to defeat.
